In the current debate about architecture and urbanism on the threshold of the new millenium, it is becoming increasingly clear that the type of architecture which is setting the trend is that being developed in dialogue with the latest inventions in civil engineering. One particularly incisive example of a successful synthesis is the work of Helmut Jahn and Werner Sobek, who have long since achieved an international reputation with their highly intelligent and philosophical brand of architecture. Using the examples of 15 international building projects from the past five years, this book presents the different phases of their collaboration. From conventional beginnings, it progressed continuously via an additive intermeshing of technology and poetry, to reach an organic harmony of 'archi-neering', coming up with beautiful, functional and efficient solutions. A large number of sketches, plans, models and photographs illustrate this constant dialogue and document the construction processes of the buildings.
